Noise Making Conference Preview

The Pearl hosted a few bands as they made their way down to Miami for the annual Noise Making Conference. I was able to snap just a few photos before the camera battery died.

But basically take everything you have ever thought about music and throw it off a seventeen story building. The noise it makes when it hits the ground is what was ejected out of the speakers the other night. There were bands playing eletronic loops (really rad!), beating on random objects that screetched as they broke under the pummeling, and even animal sounds mixed together and looped.

All in all, it was an experience...but I think Ill just keep listening to the Mattson Two and Sunbears!

... and I'm sorry about that. The holidays are crazy and well, travel catches up with you. But I hope that everyone had a fantastic New Years and Christmas.

So last night Kevin had a bunch of bands come out to the factory and just let it all hang out for a few hours. It started around 5 and lasted well into the night. Unfortunately I missed most of the jam session, but I was able to capture a few images of the stoke that was in full effect.

Surfing is an art form just like painting, pottery, and music. We all express ourselves in different ways; we might not all surf, and we might not all play music. But the commmon ground between us all is that when we do what we love, we smile, we enjoy life, and we love the moment. And thats what life is about. Enjoy.

Well Kevin finally got the new factory up and running full speed, and it is way rad. I have so many photos of the wierd, wacky, and incredible liquid slope navigating vehicles that he is about to start putting out. Just check this 5'0" Bonzer-Egg thing that was just finished. Its for one of his good buddies, and man that resin tint is nice. Same color as my truck! Stay tuned, because a lot heart and soul will be coming out of this factory very soon. Check out this months Surfer Journal. Look on the inside back cover at the Hurley ad! Rad photo right? Ya, that is what I thought too. Well my good friend Keith Novosel snapped that jewel and I just wanted to spread the word. Keith is one of the nicest people I have ever met and has a suitcase full of talent (and right now, that suitcase is touring OZ, and Im jealous!).

I know its been awhile since Ive updated the blog, but man has it been a whirlwind! Lots of work, a few super fun late evening log sessions at the NRA (New Roach Alley!)with all the boys. Some really styled out 10s were getting thrown down all over the place. Plus the new tee's finally arrived. Trim Glide Fade is now in full effect! Ill have some photos up of the shirts later tonight. We will be adding to the line very soon.

So stay tuned for some more rad tee's, an update from the new headquarters of stoke, the new Black Pearl factory, and some new short movies.

Chi mangia bene, vive bene... Eat Pure Bars

"Who eats well, lives well." It's an old Italian proverb. But it still holds as true today, as it did one thousand years ago.

I have said it before, and I will say it again, I'm not the "tree-hugging" type of person who drives a Prius, uses the canvas grocery bags (though I should), and only eats salads. I do believe in picking up after yourself, not littering, and just being smart about the environment in general. But I am still in all honesty going to eat steaks, drive my truck, and slide surf machines of the foam orientation...

But back on track, the other day a good friend of mine was kind enough to send me over a box of Pure food bars. They are entirely organic (USDA and Vegan approved) and are actually not bad tasting. In fact, the Apple Cinnamon bar is fantastic. Throw one in the fridge the night before your dawn patrol and then munch on that that while checking the swell is ideal. I only wish that I had more.

If you are on the left coast, they are found at Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and other big name retailers. If you are like me and on the right side of the country, we have the Food Lion. But you can also purchase them on their website, The Pure Bar or Amazon. They are dairy free, soy free, and gluten free. Read their story on their website, it is very interesting

One Hull of a Story

Well Ive been talking about getting a hull a lot lately. Ever since Keith Novosel mentioned that he was getting one and explained to me how they worked, I have wanted one. So one day while I was hanging out at Surf Culture, Chris, one of the owners, said that he might have one. The very next day he comes walking over and sure enough, he brought the board.

We talked about the history of the board and how it had ended up here. Apparently, one of his friends was driving through Wisconsin and saw a surf board sticking out from under a porch. He stopped and asked to see if he could buy it from the lady and she ended up giving it to him. According to her, her son had wanted to take up surfing, but got drafted for Vietnam. When he returned home, he didnt want to anymore. After a spell with Chris' friend, Chris himself was given the board. There it sat for awhile until now. Chris handed me the board and said, "Take it under two conditions. You dont sell the board, you pass it along. Two, just enjoy it!"

Now I have a board that has been all over...and I cant wait to take it for a spin!Hooray for brown boards!

Ok, I know it is a little early to be talking about wetsuits here in Florida, but... cooler waters are right around the corner. I know that no one likes wearing wetsuits, but lets face it, we have to if we want to slide. So since we have to, why not make it super comfy and stylish? Whale Wars

I don't know if anyone else watches this show, but holy cow! Whale Wars documents the goings on of the Japanese whaling fleet in the southern hemisphere. The Steve Irwin, Captain Paul's ship, is part of the non-for-profit organization titled, The Sea Shepard's. They attempt to frustrate the Japanese and get them to stop their so called, "illegal actions." The Sea Shepards state that the law is on their side due to a Whaling Act passed in the late 80's. The Japanese say that the law is on their side, claiming they are doing it for research.

Now Im not an out-and-out green peace type person, but I do believe in respecting what lets us survive (exactly like Patagonia), and I for one love this show. I'm routing for the Sea Shepards, and so should you, WATCH THE SHOW! Its on Animal Planet every Friday at 9.

After surfing for five hours today, Keith and I decided we wanted to trade off turns snapping some photos of each other in some freight training shore break. It was really rad, and Keith killed it. Got a sick ten, a bunch of 5's, and just overall really nice sliding... Then we traded. Keith was able to snap some epic photos for 5 minutes...and then the battery died. Ohh well. The good surfer was actually capured doing his thing! I wish Tinch was still there for the photos too, but he had to leave early. Next time Tinch... next time! Anyways, here are the photos, Enjoy!

I drove down to Matansas this morning to meet up with my good buddies Keith Novosel and Tinch to slide the last remaining bump from the swell. What was supposed to be a regular session, soon turned into a full on marathon. We surfed for over five hours. But more on that later.

Ive wanted to surf an Almond board for a long time now. I really love what the guys are doing over there. Super rad stuff that is getting put out. But today was my first time sliding one of their logs... It is Keith's personal log. Its 9'10" and I don't really know the rest of the dimensions, but it is super knifed out, pinched rails, but still with some weight to it. It was really fun to ride. I wish I could have gotten to ride it on a bigger or steeper day because this thing really locks in and just gets into trim really nicely. Great board for sure. Now I can officially say that they work just as well as they look.

I love to log... and I'm assuming that since you are reading this, you probably do, too. But it seems that not too many big surf companies out there support what me and all my friends love, sliding little peelers.

Anyways, here is a short list of companies that I support since they support what we all love...

1. RVCA - By far, one of my favorites. They have super rad style, really comfy tee's, and support other forms of expression like art, skating, etc. Plus it doesn't hurt that the rep in my area is a super cool guy.. Big ups to you GT. Thanks for keeping real.

2. Quiksilver - One of the big big giants out there. They don't really support longboarding that much anymore, but they still produce my favorite retro trunks. I love wearing their 16 inchers. Super cool style.

3. Ryhthm - They are a brand new company out of OZ. Super rad designs. Plus they surpport Harrison Roach (probably one of the dirtiest Alia riders out there... So epic on them) and a local stand out from Jax, Justin Quintal. Justin used to ride for Quiksilver, but has since switched over. Good on you man! They are a really cool company. I really hope that all the surf shops start picking up their stuff. You should check them out for yourself. Ryhthm

4. Patagonia - I really love Patagonia. They keep it as green as possible and they only produce the best products for both you, and they environment. Just check out their website. They have so much cool information there. They just helped produce Thomas Campbell's movie, "The Present," they have amazing riders like Belinda Bags, the Malloys, and Dane Peterson

Like I said, it is a short list. I support a lot of local companies too, but these are the big ones. Hopefully the boys at Almond and es-cent-ial get that point too. I wish only the best guys.

The Dream!

To steal a line from one of my all time favorite rappers, Kanye West, "Having money is not everything, but not having it is." (I know, a lot of people aren't into Kanye like I am, but I have a wide open mind when it comes to music... he definitely has talent.)

Anyways, back on topic... Today I was driving over to 16th to slide a few with Tinch and Tim Haire, and I got to thinking, what is this thing that we all grow up wanting? It’s the dream we all chase... but when does it come true? When do you know you are living it? How do you know when it is going to happen? No one ever tells us, although I wish they would.

Well the truth of the matter is that most of us spend most of our lives always trying to get to that next level... Whether it be a newer house, a nicer car, a new log (guilty!), or just getting that promotion or better job. We seem to forget the present most of the time. I guess this was the whole message in Thomas Campbell's "The Present." I’m not saying we shouldn't be like this, because it is definitely one of the most defining characteristics that I believe in. I am just saying that maybe we should have ambition with a focus on the now. My father always told me, "Chris, don’t rush it. Do it right the first time, slow down." Funny how after 20 something years I am finally understanding his words of wisdom.

Here I am, fresh out of college, just got my degree a year early, worked my ass off since I was 12 trying to make money, sitting here, wondering what is it that I really want to do with my life... pondering that dream. But today, I realized that I am in that dream right now. I am doing the damn thing! Sure, I don’t make six figures a year; I barely make five figures it seems. I don’t drive a brand new Benz; I drive a truck that is a piece of me. Has my heart and soul in it. I don’t live in a huge mansion, I rent out an apartment. But, this is the dream... It isn't the material things that surround us, it is the good times. The stoke. The scenery. Would I like to have all the latter? Sure, don’t we all? But let us take a moment to realize just how good we all have it. We get to slide waves. We get to connect with Mother Nature on such a level that just blows my mind sometimes. We all want more when we should really want just enough. Just enough money to let us be happy. Just enough pain to make us feel human. Just enough fives, heels, and big old 10s to keep us stoked and ready for more. This should be our motto.

Today was a good day (and who knows, I might even go out for a third session this evening). I probably surfed around 5 hours, watched Picaresque around 10 times (my new favorite movie), and I got a lot of stuff done that needed to get done. How about we all just take a breather from the rat race we call life, and just smile... grab a log the next time you get a chance, and let loose...

I wish I would have taken more photos of the actual surf, but I definitely did not have the right lens to do so. But I did manage to soak up some local culture, and I just started snapping photos. Well right before I left, I picked up a brand new log shaped by my good friend Kevin over at Black Pearl. He did an incredible job on, completely blowing my mind. Its not want I wanted... its lightyears beyond. The aptly named "Love Train" is going to be such a fun board to ride. Unfortunately I could not ride it in El Salvador due to it being huge out. But summer is in full effect. Im ready for those early morning knee-high glassy peelers... and so is the Love Train.

Just stepped off the plane. Finally back in the states. El Salvador was amazing, to say the least. Anyways, here are a couple snaps that I took while that. I will post a complete story in a day or so, along with many photos. Unfortunately, there are not that many of the surf... it was going off, therefore, I was in the water. But the culture is second to none there. Enjoy.

Summer To Do List

Surfing Magazine just ran an article about the 21 things you should do this summer... I laughed, thought about some of them, read some more, and then pondered... "Do I really need to do 21 things to make my summer rad?" Or cool? Or killer? Or any of the other 26 gajillion words to describe a good time? Well to answer that question, yes. But I plan on doing more than 21 things this summer. Because if I did only 21 things, my summer would be pretty boring.

So for my list of summer-to-dos, Ive come up with the following. Some are taken from the magazine (because they are sweet) and others are just my opinions. But regardless, I am going to try and complete them all. Summer is right around the corner, four days away. Come up with your own list, do it, feel good about it, and maybe make it your own Endless Summer.

In no particular order:

1. Keep a journal (Kind of taken from the Mag) - Ya I know, it sounds stupid, and like a lot of work. But it will be worth it to jot down some of the fun things you do to remember to do them next summer. And if all else fails, start a blog with the ideas you put down. At worst, no one will read it except for the unfortunate person that mis-spelled a google search.

2. Shapers Day (Taken from the Mag) - Im not saying stop buying your Al Merricks, and Bings, and Andersons... Im just saying next time you get a board, get it local. Support the guy that watches you surf all the time. The guy that is always ripping at your local break. Tell him to curl toes. Shapers are artists. Let them know that you appreciate them. Dont try to pinch pennies with them. Hang out, have a pint, jam out, do what ever. Just like every other important person in your life, there is a holiday for them (Mothers Day, Fathers Day, etc). Well how about we make International Surf Day (6-20-xx) also International Shapers Day too! A big thank you to all shapers, you guys fuel my stoke!

3. Surf a heat - I know, we all dream of being a pro-surfer. Getting pitted at Pipe, laying into some major hacks at J-Bay... but the truth is, it is super difficult. Surf one session like you are in a heat. 15 minutes, 10 wave max. Hard huh? Have a little more respect for the pros out there. They get it done!

4. Surf... period... anywhere, anyhow... just surf - Thats what we all like to do, get wet. It doesnt matter what you ride, or how you ride it, or where you ride it... just surf. Spend more time in the water than sitting on dry land talking about it.

5. Travel - Well this is subjective. Some of us might not get to travel due to many reasons. If this is the case, just surf a break you havent surfed around you. If its crummy, just be happy you didnt spend a grand to get skunked. You can turn around and be home in an hour to cut the grass you were supposed to do anyways. If you can travel, enjoy it. Soak up everything you can, and leave it nicer than when you arrived!

6. Sleep on the beach (Taken from the Mag) - Pretty much in the title, do it. It is fantastic

7. Go unplugged - Once upon a time, there were no cell phones or computers. For one day, dont use them. See how much more relaxed you are... it is fantastic

8. Try something new - It doesnt matter what it is. Dont be closed minded, try it... who knows, it might be the best thing in the world.

9. Wear sunscreen - We all hate it, but the sun hates our skin. Protect it. Protect yourself. Be smart. No one wants to look like a piece of leather.

10. Start a garden - Organic food is amazing. It is easy to start a garden too. Grow your own food, cook fresh. You will be surprised at how much better you feel afterwards.

11. Take a walk - Walk around. Park the car, get some excerise. Enjoy your surroundings. You live where you live for a reason... make the best of it. We quickly forget the beauty that is always around us.

12. Call someone and tell them you love them - It doesnt matter who they are, just do it. Make someones day! Who knows who will call you and tell you the same.

13. Repair an old board - Strip it down, make those ding repairs, and take her for a spin. Kick the dust, enjoy old faithful.

14. Enjoy those nights on the town - Its summer, it is amazing outside. Hit up those bars and pubs that sit on the beach. Have a pint! Talk to people, get out and have some fun. Make it a summer that you wont forget.

15. Take a photo - Take a photo of something that interests you, or something that is cool. Photography is addicting though, so be careful...

16. Loose the ego - We all have egos, lets try to tame them. Check yourself, and just put on a smile. We are all equal, so treat people like it. Just put on a smile, and chill. Its summer time, the living is supposed to be easy!

17. Have a goof off sess - Next time the waves are flat, go goof off. Take the fins out, or ride it backwards, or tandem surf. Do whatever... just dont surf properly for the entire session. HAVE FUN! You will be surpised at how much you laugh.

18. Pack your wetsuit in the very back of your closet - Its not the winter, you dont need a suit. Baggies only! There actually used to be a time when we didnt have wetsuits. Get a tan, forget the winter, and enjoy the summer.

19. Stop wishing for amazing waves - Ok, it sounds weird, but come on... We always wish for amazing waves, and when they dont come, we get depressed. So just stop it. It cant always be like Malibu, or Pipe, or Turtles, or The Pass, or Noosa... Stop dreaming. Enjoy the waves you have, and make the best of them. Just be happy you dont live in Kansas... They have no ocean!

20. RIDE A SINGLEFIN - It will change your life. Just like the Coldplay album. And if it doesnt? Well lm fresh out of ideas... try something else.

So those are my 20 things. Sure, they are random, but so are lot of things we do. Just have fun. "Be good, or be good at it" is what my old swim coach would tell me. So do the same, enjoy your surfing, enjoy your family. Get stoked, its summer time!

And for the 21.

DO MORE than whats on your list... Get outside, paddle around, tell everyone hey, run around naked, wear bell-bottems... it doesnt matter... Just have fun and enjoy your summer. Before long, we will all be wishing it was still summer when the leaves start falling.

Well first off, it was a great day. The FedeX guy not only made my day by getting me my passport (correct this time... I checked... twice) but he also brought Kev a much needed package as well. He was stoked, I was stoked, the FedeX guy was stoked. Same dood, spreading the love. Good on ya man!

So after seeing those cell phone photos, I had to check it out for myself. Thank goodness I remembered to pick up the camera before I headed out, words cant explain how much this board means to me. It blew my mind, and it isnt even finished, let alone wet! Tomorrow the order of the day is to gloss and polish, and then let cure... Anyways here are a few exposures of the aptly named, "Love Train"... enjoy. When it is all said and done, I will definitely throw up a few photos!

Well lately Ive been exploring this more artistic side of me. Im starting to really experiment with new and different aspects of photography and board design... just really tapping into some things that I never thought Id like.

Kevin and me have just been linking up and talking about all kinds of stuff, and its super rad. I really dig people that are just mellow and love to be stoked and happy. Makes life a lot easier if we all just smile. But enough of the back story, check out Cooperfish Surfboards. His resin work is second to none. If only I knew how he did it all... Santa Monica Hardcase

After searching high and low for months for a Santa Monica Hardcase, I finally found one last week. I will need one for the trip so I can take my logs with me, and there really is no other way to travel with glassed on fins. I hear that they are a pain to travel with, but I guess we will see in a few days time.

Long story short, a friend of mine, Terry Nails, recommended a guy by the name of Juan. He told me that he might have one for sale since Santa Monica is no longer making the cases. I called Juan, and sure enough he had one for me. As he says, it really is just a "glorified re-molded trashcan." So after many weeks of making plans to link up and get the case, it finally happened last Friday. He just opened up a shop in Cocoa Beach, FL. He is also the same guy that invented the molded skim board (basically brought the sport to where it is at right now), founded Oneworld Fins, and has been shaping boards for over two decades; and that is just the surface. We decided to meet at his new store in Cocoa so I could pick it up.

Little did I know that a freak hurricane squal decided that it wanted to just pour rain all day here. Driving down to Cocoa was a pain. Then once I got there, it did the same there. It was just my luck I guess. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction... But the rain did have a nice side effect, it gave me an excuse to just chill out there, and enjoy his new shop. Here are a couple quick exposures that I snapped. Enjoy.

Well El Salvador is now right around the corner, just 10 days aways. Everything is starting to come together (or fall apart, depending on how you look at it). The plans are getting finalized, the flights are getting set in stone, and the waves are expected to build with a storm off of New Zealand and another off of Tahiti. So, needless to say, I am pretty stoked right now.

But, in order to actually leave this country, one must need a passport...and well, mine had a small problem. When I opened up the package to get my new passport, I was amped. I kept thinking, this is just starting to fall right into place, no stress at all. (Big mistake.) As Im about to sign it, I notice that my birthday was not what it should be... according to my passport, I am 71 (1937). And well, for those that know me, Im not 71 years old. But if I was, I would be one sexy ageless old man. I would be a real life Benjimin Button. So, in order to get it corrected I had to send it back to the government. Hopefully it gets back to me by my trip, they said it should. If it doesnt, this funny story, will turn into a horror story.

But enough of the funny stories, the good ones are soon to follow. Beautiful waves, beautiful people, and beautiful boards are the focus. IM STOKED! Summer is here. Had a fun little logging session this morning, got a huge ding, didnt care, its fixable. Got sunburned from surfing all morning and raquet ball all afternoon (super fun game, very tiring), dont care, its fixable. Just keep the smile on the face, and keep on keeping on.

To everyone out there, enjoy yourself, get stoked, be happy, and curl toes! It is a tremendous feeling!

Its been awhile...

Well its been awhile since Ive posted up anything, and I well I didn't want you to think Ive been lazy. So here are a few photos of what Ive been up to, just hanging out with Kevin at Black Pearl.

Lately we have been hanging out, just bouncing ideas off of each other, and really just getting stoked on not just surfing, but life in general. He is a super rad guy, who really loves what he does. I can't wait to sit down and really pick his brain on how BPC was founded and how it has grown to what it is today. Plus, not to mention get my new log from him.

The Weather is just weather

Well.... here it is the dead of summer, and well.... it just doesn't seem like it. The past week has been nothing but huge washing machine surf and rain. Hopefully this system clears up and we can go back to what summer normally is, small glassy peelers. But this crazy nor-easter is just chilling right over us like it has no where to go. As it turns out, this is really only the second nor-easter of the year... crazy weather.

The Pier in St. Auggie is like the spot to be to get your photo taken. There are some good waves to be had there at the right tide, but not really my favorite spot. I like a smaller crowd. But this aside, many people love this spot, including Rob Williams Rob is always snapping away if there are some glassy walls to slide. Check out his work, it is really amazing. THE PRESENT!!!!

Well after a long, long year of waiting, The Present finally came out! Ive been wanting to see this movie so badly. Ive been bugging Chris and Mik at Surf Culture on an almost daily basis waiting to see when a copy is going to come in (and I still am after seeing it).

So, knowing they had a show up in Jacksonville Beach at Landshark Cafe, I tried to round up all my friends and make it a fun night. Tinch and his wife Shelly came along with Dustin Miller, the filmer for Mikey DeTemple's movie Picaresque, and his wife, Keith Novosel, and my good friend Matt. It was a fun time just getting to hang out and enjoy ourselves.

The show was pretty rad too; had Mattson 2 playing live to get everything going, and then just dove straight into the movie. For $8 a ticket, I wish it was in a better venue, but hey, Im not going to complain (no one listens when I do anyways). I was just stoked to be there and see something new and different. The Seedling and Sprout are getting worn out. It was a really good movie. It surprised me a little, but on the whole, amazing! Some of the biggest airs and longest gnarliest tens Ive seen in awhile. I really think T.Moe made a complete surf film that will attract not just sliders, but also the groms that idealize Dane. I cant wait to buy the movie and watch it again. As usual, it had an amazing soundtrack, and like I said earlier, just a crazy good movie.

Ive been posting a lot of Tinch over the past few days... I cant help it, he rips. But he isnt the only one who slides and glides around here. New Camera... More content!!

Well I finally picked up my new camera today. Really stoked on it. I was able to snag a new Canon 50D. Hopefully by the time of the El Salvador trip I will have some better glass for it. But for now, the 28-135mm should do just fine for all the profiles that should be coming out soon. In fact, I'm going to be cruising over to Kevin's shop, (Black Pearl Creations) tomorrow to snap a few photos. He is shaping out a new log just for my trip, really amped on it.

So, just keep an eye out to the "Coming Soon" section, that is where Ill be focusing a lot of my attention. Take care.

Well Keith Novosel just shot me a quick little email letting me in on how his recent trip to Cali went. If you dont know who he is, you definitely should check him out. He is a fantasic photographer. The top right corner image in the title is actually one of his photos! (Thanks again Keith). He takes a lot of photos with the guys over at Almond and did a lot of the still photography for the just released movie, Picaresque. Of which, is a super sick movie. Summer Time

Well now that summer is here, it is time to travel! I love small glassy waves, but sometimes, it is just too flat here in STA. So why not take a trip? ...El Salvador here I come!

This July Im going to be flying down to Zunzal for a week or two with a close buddy of mine, and we are going to stay at El Hostel in Zunzal... $8 bucks a day, can't really beat it. You should check these guys out.
